This island is famous for its beaches and parks.
Cat Ba Beachs
The first beach is called Cat Co Island — you can get it by following the harbor road west until it ends, and then taking the steps and going over the headland. On the other side is the Sunrise Resort, but the beach in front of it is open to the public. There are many more facilities here, like restaurant, and a place where you can rent various beach equipment — hammocks, float things, kayaks and even swim suits, at fairly reasonable prices. All the beaches feature murky green water and dull brown sand, so don’t expect to be blown over, but on a hot day in summer — what the heck, it’s a beach.
Cat Ba National Park
It is noted for its mangroves, subtropical evergreen forests, freshwater lakes, and even some coral reefs down along the coast. While rich in flora, hikers often report seeing little in the way of fauna, though there are reportedly some animals running about — we only saw goats.
Prepare well for any of these treks, as they are not easy — really and truly, spring for a guide if you can. Those that try to do it on their own often end up turning back. Any hotel in town that arranges tours can help you sort out which trek to take and hook you up with a guide.
