There is nothing like the surprise of surfacing through a bank of clouds to find that the sun is still shining above the overcast sky. This is a common experience for holidaymakers, as their plane leaves the ground in the UK and emerges from the grey ceiling that keeps everything gloomy at ground level.
It is the kind of revelation that can often lead people to move to hotter climes, as they realise that better weather can be had all year round in some hotspots. At the very least it can also be the impetus to book a holiday somewhere sunny.
And it is the reliability of the weather that prevails in the Canary Islands which often inspires tourists to head here. Whilst the islands are still very much in the northern hemisphere, they are about as tropical as it gets in Europe, but without the accompanying hurricanes or monsoons.
This steady climate is much of the reason why the archipelago is still a popular destination for visitors from the UK more than forty years after they first began to woo tourists to holiday here. Lanzarote, in addition to enjoying this benign climate, has also developed in such a unique way that it should be judged on its own merits and not as part of the islands as a whole.
Unlike the other islands, there has been a very deliberate policy of controls put in place to stop the place being swamped. Accommodation, such as the variety of hotels in Lanzarote, is of a good standard, with buildings only three storeys tall.
Four and five star establishments offer guests the perfect opportunity to relax and be pampered, with most sporting spa and wellness centres. Whilst holidaymakers who prefer to create their own holidays in Lanzarote will find that there is a huge choice of self-catering accommodation at their disposal.
Not only are there many apartment complexes in the three main resorts, there is also a wide selection of holiday villas in Lanzarote. These tend to be similar to family homes, but have been adapted to offer the ideal base for families and couples who prefer their own space.
And as all come with private swimming pools, often set within secluded tropical gardens, it is no surprise this is becoming a more favoured option for people looking to unwind at their own pace. And what better way to de-stress than by the pool with a book and a tall drink in hand, whilst dinner cooks on the barbecue?
